The Windsor Aquarium Society is helping Ms Walker's grade 7/8 class with their 20 gallon tank. This is a great opportunity for us to pass on some of our knowledge to young people who have an interest in aquariums. I can remember myself as a young boy in grade school being mesmerized by our classroom tank. So lets help plant the seed. The tank is up and running and have just added a piece of driftwood and a nice clump of java fern. Gabe (gabor129 ) is donating a group of red wagtail platy's to start off. I will also be donating a group of cory's to the class tank. This is just the beginning and I do not want to add to many fish all at once but will be looking for other appropriate community fish and plants in the coming weeks. Also the class will be following this post and Ms Walker will be posting pictures and keeping us updated as we move along. So lets welcome Ms. Walker's class to the Windsor Aquarium Society....

Were happy to have you. Welcome to the club. Maybe a few guppies in a few weeks can be added to that tank.

Hello Thank you sooooo much for sponsoring our tank. The students have learned more this year than any other year with the tank. They have learned about how to cycle the tank and about beneficial bacteria. Not one of them had a clue about that. Recently we all learned about how java fern actually grows its roots into the driftwood. We are all anxiously awaiting fish but it has also been interesting watching the tank take shape over the last few weeks. I will post pictures and updates and share anecdotes from the students here. I will be posting a link to this thread on our class Twitter account and pointing our staff towards it too. Your community has been so welcoming and I cannot thank you enough. The students are enjoying this and personally, What had turned into fish-tank-drudgery I did just for the sake of the students, has now become enjoyable once again. Here is a picture from the tank today:

Yay!!! I love it! Good work guys, I have a daughter in grade 7 seeing the tank unfold is a much better way to learn about ecosystems than in a textbook! I hope they have a lot of fun with it this year!

Fantastic. This reminds me of the tank we did for a special class at a school here. One of the guys we worked with wanted to do something for his mother (the teacher). The kids loved the tank and it helped keep them calm. This is what the kids did.

Hope you are all enjoying the class aquarium and I'm sure you are all pumped to finally get some life into it. On Friday I will be dropping of 7 juvenile Corydoras Concolor . They are catfish that will stay on the bottom of the tank. While they will clean up any uneaten food off the bottom they also need to be fed just like any other fish in the tank and therefor I will also send along some TetraMin tablets. They are sinking tablets and will ensure that the catfish are fed. I will be dropping off red wagtail platy's next Wednesday and since I come into town most Wednesday mornings consider it to be fish delivery day. Enjoy

Wooohooo! The students are very keen to see fish in the tank.....and so am I. Another few kids from the other classes I teach said "Are there fish yet?". I'm glad the plants and fish are coming in batches. It's keeping the excitement going. Cool, too, that we'll have fish in there taking up different niches within the habitat. That's makes for great discovery and learning moments. I will have my 2 "Aqua Tech" girls do some online research of Corydoras Concolor. Then they can take what they have learned and teach the rest of us!
