Thanks for taking the time to post these pictures . I see what appears to be the eggs in the 3rd picture but I think its white sand from the tank that the driftwood came out of. Either way its a great opportunity for the students to learn about nerite snails.

Great job with the tank!
The "nerite eggs" are on the wood that the java fern is attached to! However I'm not sure who donated the wood! If it was Glen then maybe, but I do not know if anyone else has them!
Edit: Lol Les you posted while I was looking at the post!

I have "Zebras", and "orange tire track" nerites... When I move, I'll be breeding them. They're laying eggs all over my planted tanks. It seems to be the "oranges" though.. as I never had the eggs show up till I added them. and in one tank (with the same eggs) is only 1 orange. no zebras... Nerites are asexual, and do not need a mate, from what I read. However eggs can hatch in brackish water, but better results with marine. They will not hatch at all in fresh.

stellar can you put the eggs into salt water to hatch them after they have been layed in fresh water?

So, the tank seems to be running along just fine....despite not having had much time to focus on it this week....what with a school Movie Night, Read-A-Thon, Halloween craziness, and finally a Dance this afternoon. Next week we are back to a stable routine and we will be able to make some progress on our Tank Journal and Fish Facts board. As part of the Read-A-Thon, all classes did a tour of each other's rooms. Many little eyes turned in amazement at our fish tank as they passed by.
This morning when I walked into the class behind my students, "S" (first letters of name) was already feeding the fish. Later, "H", a grade 8 boy said, "Those fish look really happy, Miss. I think they like their home." I have to agree with him. And when grade 7's, "Z" and "Y", were done their math today, they both pulled up chairs to watch the fish. Plus, now that all the Read-A-Thon decorations are down, the vibrant fish tank will once again become a focal point in the room.
Well, that's it for now. It's Friday after a crazy week. I'm going to take a teacher-nap.

The classroom is blessed to have Les and Gabe contributing so much to it. Good job to everyone who has helped. Giving back is great!

Today a grade 8 boy was giving a supply teacher a very rough time when I happened to be walking by that classroom. So I told him to head to my room where I had him sit down in front of our fish tank. I let him feed the fish too and then he calmed right down and started giving me a play-by-play of what the fish were doing. Fish tank as mood changer.

That is great and so true. I always feel more relaxed when I sit in front of my tanks. Especially after a stressful day. Excellent idea.
