Today I dropped off 6 Black Emperor Tetras. I really think the black colour of the fish will really stand out. We are coming to the point where the tank is almost full so we need to be careful what else we add. I have something in mind for next week that I know the children will get a huge kick out of. Think invertebrates.
Enjoy

Those fish today were really interesting. They started off mostly grey in colour while in the bag and shortly after being released. Some time later, the students noticed that they had turned black. What was that all about? The tank is such a magnet now. So many different students have moments where they will go over there and spend time watching.

The fish turned a greyish colour due to the stress of being put in a bag and changing aquariums. You will notice tomorrow they will be jet black. So glad the children are enjoying the tank. Wait until they see next weeks box...

The fish seem to be doing well. It doesn't seem like we've lost any and their bodies look good with no signs of disease (not that I'm an expert) and the plants look healthy as well. Today a couple of boys found a centipede in my science lab so they caught it in a beaker and were going to use it to scare a girl who is afraid of them. Instead, I said "Why don't you feed it to the fish?" Not sure this was an okay thing to do, but the students went crazy as the fish picked away at the live centipede. Gruesome? Yes. But who among us did not love watching this sort of a thing when we were kids......some of us still like it. I hope we didn't do any damage to the fish (ie poison?) or anything. One of our aqua-techs has made a nice title page for our tank journal and has entitled it "Our Little Ocean". Next week we will begin decorating the bulletin board as our grade 8's are away at camp. Here is a pic of the students gathering around to watch the feeding frenzy. They reported that the glass catfish and a platy were the fish that enjoyed the centipede.

That is awesome, I'm sure you didn't do the fish any harm as live food is always the best. It sure seems as though the tank is a huge hit and is becoming everything that we hoped it would be.
