I am so proud to announce that the Windsor Aquarium Society will be sponsoring Ms. Walkers grade 7/8 classroom aquarium . This is the forth year in a row that we will be involved with this incredible project . Ms Walker and her aqua-tecks do a great job in maintaining this tank throughout the school year with a little guidance from all of us . The tank is up and running with a new Aqueon Quiet Flow 20 filter and has some Dwarf chain loaches along with some gold mollies and a couple of gold dust mollies . Sam's Pampered Pets as donated a can of fish food to get us started .
So through out the next few months we are looking to add some community fish , amamo shrimp , plants and a few rabbit snails with the hope of keeping it as interesting for the students as possible .
Ms Walker will also be updating us on the progress of the tank and any interesting story's that involve the students interacting with it.
So lets all welcome Ms Walker and the students of Prince Edward Public School .

Hello Fantastic Fishie Folks!
We are so glad to back with you again. The students cleaned the tank early this school year. They set up the plants and fake long. Then they set all their energy on nagging me to get fish. That's a good thing. I have a nice group of interested kids this year. They have chosen names out of a hat to see who gets to name the current fish. Our new filter is sooooo quiet. That's a big bonus during silent reading or math tests, etc.
Well, let's see what stories unfold as the year goes by with our fishie friends.

The other day I went to the school and dropped of 3 bristlenose pleco's , 3 Amano shrimp and 6 Albino Corydoras Aeneus . Also got a chance to talk to Ms Walker and see the tank . Tank is coming along , is in need of some low light plants , driftwood and a couple of incandescent bulbs . Also more fish will be added in time . Don't want to rush things .
Thanks to Gabe for the donation of Pleco's and the Amano Shrimp.

Depending on the size of incandescent bulbs, sometimes you can replace them with mini compact fluorescent lamps. Might be better for plants and doesn't heat up as much.

Thank you so much, guys. The kids are loving the tank. They held a lottery to see who would get to name the critters. They are regularly cleaning the tank. How often should we do a water swap?
The tank this year is in the corner on a table. This area is becoming our classroom "MakerSpace" where kids can tear old things apart, make new stuff, or just do some crafts. It's a very relaxing, calming section of the room to be in. The fish tank is so good in our room, especially for some kids.
I've got to get out to one of your meetings with a tray of brownies or something to thank you. When and where do you meet?

We meet at the Moose Lodge on Tecumseh Road West but that could be changing . Check back next week and we will let you know. Glad the club can be of help with your classroom tank . We also find fish tanks very relaxing. If possible regular weekly or biweekly 10 to 20% water changes are best . Do you have an old water jug to age the water ?

Dropped off 5 White Skirt Tetra's , 2 large snails , 2 incandescent light bulbs and a Pleco Screw Feeder with a piece of Cucumber on it for the pleco's and others to enjoy . My hope is that as the tank becomes more diverse it with keep the interest of the students.

THANKS for the recent additions. This year's students are very interested in the tank. This corner of the room is becoming our Maker Space area and a mini "Zone" which is the name for the room in the school where students can go for a quick break or to talk to someone if they are angry, hurt, upset, etc. My students want to make a mini "zone" in the corner where they can go and read quietly or get away from others for a bit. What is more de-stressing than a fish tank? Yay!
I will say the water has remained cloudy this year, even after the last water change so I am not sure what is going on. I think the glass needs a good wiping but I am not sure that's all it needs. We'll try cleaning the glass on Monday.

I think the glass needs a good wiping but I am not sure that's all it needs. We'll try cleaning the glass on Monday. So glad the tank is working out this year and has become a place of peace for the students to retreat to . That's also true for so many of us , nothing like watching the activities in a tank to take your mind off things . That's why I'm tying to make the tank as diverse as possible . That way everytime a student looks in they can see sometimes totally new . Everything from the snails , shrimp to the little pleco's to the fish . Soon there will be live plants and other fish to peak their interest . As far as the cloudy tank goes I suspect it's going through a mini cycle for some reason . Could be that the tank wasn't fully cycled when we started adding fish to it . We will suspend any more additions until this works itself out . Is it possible to do a 10-15% water change tomorrow ? Also remember to remove the veggie feeder and any remaining cucumber in the morning as that can add to the cloudiness if left to decompose . You can add fresh veggies to it each day if you like , maybe have an aqua-teck bring something from home . I find cucumber or zucchini work best but you can also try lettuce , sweet potato etc . Like I said remember to remove any uneaten food the next morning . If anyone else has any ideas please post them here . It's a great way to help the students learn about this hobby of ours.
