PPS. Oh, and I've encouraged them to have a look around when they are here, especially to look at other peoples' tank journals and photos, which are so AMAZING! I think you may have "hooked" (pun intended) some young enthusiasts this year.

That's great. The kids sure could use some good news about the tank after all of this. Should I have your empty containers waiting at the office for you? Yes please have them ready at the office . Thanks This was a hard lesson to learn but I think you and the students handled well . Live and learn as they say .

PS. I've linked this forum to the students' Edsby page which we use as our internal email system and so some of them are coming over here to follow along as we post stuff. So if anyone wants to "talk" directly to them, you can do so because some of them will be here reading these comments. Awesome

Dakotah has this kit (below) at home and wants to get a beta. Do you folks have any advice before he begins?

I would rinse it out with clean water . Then fill it up and let it sit for a couple of days , which will get rid of any chlorine. After that he should be able to add the Betta . Make sure to set water out in another clean container to use for weekly water changes . Dakotah I hope you enjoy your new Betta when you get one . Let us know how you make out .

I would also place the new Betta Bowl away from any drafts and in a warm place in your house . Betta’s prefer a warm environment.

Agreed that Bettas like it warm. It's possible to buy a heater for such a small tank fairly cheap (something like this one) just to keep them comfortable. I suggest to feed the betta a lot less than you think it needs! It's said that their stomach is about the same size as their eyeball, and so they only need a couple pellets or flakes per feeding. That will help from keeping the water getting too polluted, too quickly!

Dakotah has this kit (below) at home and wants to get a beta. Do you folks have any advice before he begins? As stated, Betas like it warm so about 78 degrees is a good temperature for the Beta fish and although they can tolerate poor water conditions, they live longer in a filtered tank (some sort of biological filtration). In a tank that size without filtration, would be best to change 50% of the water once to twice a week (fill up a jug with water 24hrs prior to water change so the water gets to room temperature and any chlorine in the water dissipates). They can live in room temperature water but they will be sluggish and their immune system will be weak.

Dakotah tried to register for this site but he says you have to be 13 so he didn't. Anyway, he's reading this site so it is like you are talking to him anyway.
He says the advice is great. He thinks his house is cold and he doubts he'll be able to get a heater for the tank, but could he put it near the furnace vent or maybe in a south-facing window, or would that promote too much algae growth?

Putting the tank near the furnace vent would give the small tank inconsistent temperature. The club could definitely help with the heater .

Marina makes small Betta heaters that are only like 8 watts that are made for tanks that size.

Thanks for the fish. They were all released in to the tank today. Sorry I forgot all about getting your foam boxes down to the office! I'm running out of space for them, so definitely next time.

Dropped off
6 Glo-lite Tetra's
4 Otocinclus
4 Garra Rufa so called Doctor Fish
Also dropped off a new filter pad . Change it out with the old one on a day when you DO NOT DO a water change .
I think the students will particularly like the Garra's as their playful behavior with each other can be fun to watch .
I can pick up the styro's any time.
