It's cool how when there is more movement in the tank, more students notice, and approach the tank to have a look for a while. I think small schools of fish actually work better than one or two bigger fish. Students like to see the little guys swimming around with their pals. And smaller fish means MORE fish. This seems to be something they like. A lot more students have come around the past couple of days to see the new fish. The tank is looking good and Dakotah has reminded me that because Friday is a PA Day, we better do a bit of a water change tomorrow. He is so great about caring for our fishy friends!

Dakotah says he would have to get the heater himself but he can't afford it right now. I'd like to get him one and then he can pay me back by continuing to work so well on our class tank. Does anyone have a used Betta heater I could purchase? And where is a good place to get a Betta once he is all set up?

Aqua Animania has a lot of bettas! As for the heater for a beta bowl I do not have one. However I might be able to talk to one of the stores to see if one of them willing to donate one! I need a couple of days thought! Also other members might have one!

Thanks. Just let me know what I owe you. Dakotah has promised to work off the payment with me. He is very happy to hear that he will be able to set up his tank and tells me that he has been doing a lot of online research.
And if your styro is not waiting for you at the office this time, tell the secretary to buzz me and I can have kids run it down in 10 seconds so you don't have to wait. It's hard to keep track of the million things there are to at school, all while kids are calling "Miss" "Miss" "Miss" all day long. I feel like a plate-spinner at the circus!

Set yourself up a water change schedule there, Dakotah, 2 to 3 times a week, and try to keep to it as much as you possibly can!
Something to think about, moving forward, is saving up to buy a bigger home for your betta some day. Maybe see if there are any chores you can do for cash, put away some birthday money, shovel snow for your neighbours for a few bucks, anything like that. I know it's not always that easy to save up, but it really is worth it if you can!
The best home for your betta is going to be between 2.5 and 5 gallons! He will love having all of the extra room to play, and you can usually get a tank with a filter in that size range for $40-50.
More water + a filter = more stable water conditions, and less frequent water changes!

Also, keep an eye on the temperature in that small tank. Most of those small beta heaters are good at keeping the water at 78 degrees but are usually for a little bigger tanks as suggested by Xander. Make sure that the water line is always at the correct level as per heater instructions because if the water level drops lower, the heater tries to heat the room and not the water! That could make the water temperature rise drastically in that little tank.

Over on our Edsby site, Dakotah is telling me to get over here and thank you folks for all the great advice. I think he is pretty overwhelmed at how you all swooped in and supported him with your super-duper fish knowledge. Also on Edsby I noticed that he voted for "science" in a subject poll another student posted, and commented that he wants to be a biologist. That's also pretty cool.......because I was a biology major and still love the field. You may have yourself a future member of the club here.

Looks like Dakotah is getting things set up. Dakotah there are some youtube videos I noticed about setting up betta tanks. There are even ones with your particular "E Z Care" tank.

Picked up a small heater this morning at Petsmart . It’s a 10 watt Mini Heater made by Aqueon . So tell Dakotah all his hard work has paid off . I will drop it off next Tuesday ..... FYI... Couple warnings about this heater.... this product claims that if you leave it outside of water but plugged in, it has a 'thermal safety shut-off' that will initiate, and the unit will then be rendered unusable after that (trash). Basically, if you forget to shut it off while doing a water change... no more heater. Other issue is, this heater is "always on" meaning that it might raise a 2.5 gallon tank from 70 degrees to 76-77 degrees and will stay there as long as the room is always 70 degrees. On a smaller tank size, it might heat up to say 85 degrees in a 70 degree room.

And my house...well my room is like 10 degrees at night, and in the middle of the day it averages around 17 degrees and I’m wondering do you think that will be bad or good with the heater because my room is not 70 degrees Fahrenheit
