Hello everyone!
So if you did not read the post about the Christmas goodies, might as well start out like this.......
On Dec. 22 2017 I purchased a 33 gallon long tank! The dimensions for this tank is 48" long, 12" wide, and 13" high. Previously to this purchase my wife agreed to a modification to my fish rack in my basement!
Pictures to follow of the whole project, but this is mainly going to be the River tank journal.
Most of you know that I slowly purchased all the livestock that I am going to put in this tank over the last year or so. Therefore I know exactly what fish I am going to put in this tank!
- 2 sewellia lineolata
- 6 Gastromyzon scitulus
- 4 Gastromyzon viriosus
- 6 Garra flavatra
The only thing I do not have is the white cloud minnows I would like to use as the sitter fish in the tank. I know someone in the club who has a school of quite rare white clouds, so I hope I can purchase some from the breeder he got them from. If not I need to find some long finned ones!!!
Since I already have the most of the livestock I do not have to worry about the quarantine procedure! I already treaded all the fish with Leminasole to get rid of all the internal and external parasites, as well as, death with most of the losses that would happen with the new arrival of fish!
As for the equipment I will be using:
- tank 33 gallon long
- river manifold filtration found here: river manifold with the possible alteration of the whole side of the tank being a 2” black 30 PPI Poret Foam sheet. That way I would not have to worry about getting enough flow through the sponges covering the intake!
- I have a maxi jet 1200, a maxi jet 600, a maxi jet 500, a maxi jet 400, and two aqua clear 70 power heads. With one power head being higher and one lower I am hoping to create sufficient unidirectional flow to recreate their natural environment.
- The substrate will be mostly inert 2-3 mm gravel with sand and large smooth river rocks to encourage algae growth for natural grazing sites for the fish! I am not sure what these fish required for them to breed therefore I will have all different substrate available for them! The challenge will be keeping the substrate from blowing away in the "current"!
- The decoration will include a large knotted (or several smaller pieces of wood glued together to make a large one) driftwood, a couple of Manzanita wood pieces to anchor some plants to.
Speaking of plants, they are a bit of a problem! I was thinking of using some of my hardier Cryptocorines, however the substrate will be inert. Than I was thinking of using Riccardia Chamedryfolia, Vesicularia dubyana, Bolbitis heudelotii, anubias var. nana, anubias var. nana petite, Bucephalandra 'Mini Catherine', Bucephalandra "green wavy", and Bucephalandra red. However as I was researching all these plants i realized they are all low light plants!!! This tank will be moderate to high light for to promote the algae growth for natural foodstuff for the fish! So I think it will be a lot of trial and error before I can narrow down the plants that will do good in this setup.
- Lights - this is another problem!!! I would love to have 6500 LED lights on this tank but I am not willing to spend $600 on a freshwater plant grow light! So here are some alternatives!!!
Northern Lights Hydroponics has LED grow lights for around $85.00 to $150.00 depending on the size.
Electrozad has LED shop lights with two 7000K bulbs for around $120.00
Costco has LED stoplight with two 5000K bulbs on sale for $49.99
And there is always the regular T8 stoplights with two 6500K bulbs for around $60.00
Well this is how far I got so far! What do you think? Any suggestions are appreciated!!!
