Awesome news and happy to hear it is doing so well. It is great seeing kids take such a interest. I wonder how many of your students have a tank at home or if any of there parents do.

One grade 8 student is hoping for a fish to die so he look at it under the microscope. Cool that he is interested, but not cool he wants a fish to die! I'll get him some other cool stuff to look at. All in the name of Science ![;)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/wink.png) When I was that age, I had a microscope and enjoyed grossing out my older sister by showing her what is in water, soil and bugs ![;)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/wink.png)

Today I dropped off a box containing 5 Tiger Barbs , 5 Pristella Tetra's and a replaced filter cartridge for their filter. I hope the students enjoy their new fish as this is the first new additions in some time. Looking forward to a tank update and the students reaction to this fish. I included instructions on how to replace the cartridge , if you have any questions please let us know........Enjoy

Thank you so much! A while back the water was getting cloudy and the sides were showing some algae growth. We just completed an enormous tank clean-out last week. The kids took the fish and shrimp right out into a container of tank water. They really dropped the water level and added new water each day over a few days until it was back up. Then they added the fish and shrimp back in, slowly adding the new tank water to the original water in the container bit by bit first. The water looks great. The fish look fine. We lost one a few weeks back and that is what prompted the big clean-up. The filter was crazy dirty and I was going to get one......but then your package showed up. They kids loved the new fish. They were so excited and surprised by your drop-off. They did all the right things and many students took turns checking out the new guys. The fish tank continues to be a source of interest, serenity, and science-learning in our room. We love it. Thank you so much for the recent "boost" to our fishy fascination. ![](http://s15.postimg.org/ujemnez9z/fish_April_2015.jpg)

PS> One mishap. I made a homemade funnel attached to a hose so the kids could more easily fill those big water jugs with water from the tap. Well, someone got the tap running and the funnel-hose filling the water jug. But then they walked away.......and forgot about it.......I discovered it and turned the tap off immediately! Our custodian came in and asked if we had a water leak. I explained. He was not impressed. Apparently the water which was rolling across the floor, was then heading down a hole around a pipe in my lab, straight down to the kindergarten room below us. It narrowly missed the teacher's desk and only ruined one poster she had. My aqua techs felt so bad....they were even too afraid to go downstairs and apologize to the teacher and custodian. I did so on their behalf, and of course she understood. Needless to say, we will be filling the water jugs the "old fashioned" way from now on.

So glad the fish are doing well and also that the kindergarten teacher was so understanding . That has happen to a lot of us but we didn't have to explain it to a custodian , we had to explain it to our other half . Much scarier !!!!!!!!!!

News Flash - Today, no other than Daniel, fish tank fan extraordinaire, discovered that one of the shrimp is pregnant! Wow! So cool. Everyone one was so excited! Well, a couple of them said "Ewww, gross", but they don't know what the heck they're talking about. I had grade 8's for science at the time. We used the class ipad to learn all about this online. Should we use an in-tank container to separate her from the others? Or just let nature take its course, hoping there are enough hiding spots for the little guys?

Amano Shrimp babies or shrimpetts need brackish water to survive . They kind of breed in the reverse of what salmon do . Whereas salmon go from saltwater to freshwater to spawn , these shrimp go from freshwater to brackish water to drop their baby shrimp. That's the bad news , the good news is that your shrimp must be enjoying their tank and are very healthy.
Maybe someone else will come along and explain it better then I did , I'm not really a shrimp guy...
And tell Daniel he ROCKS !!!!!!!!!!!!!

Wild shrimp live coastally, where they release their young where fresh water stream meets the sea. After some four to five weeks, during which the baby shrimp frequently moult and fatten up on plankton, they move back upstream to restart their lives in freshwater mode. A shrimp full of eggs means she is happy, healthy and well fed.

Daniel is graduating this year. I'm going to miss that kid coming in and checking on the fish and shrimp and looking so content to be around them. He's been telling me about all the yellow perch and such that he's been catching down at the river lately. So I bought him a package of my favourite "Canadian Fisherman - Breading and Batter Mix". I've been trying to let him know there are jobs he can pursue if he loves fish so much from biologist to fish store and everything in between.

Hello Everyone!
On behalf of myself and my students, I would like to thank you all for sponsoring our classroom fish tank again this year. I'd like to thank Les in particular for all of his deliveries and take-down of the tank at the end.
The students really enjoyed our tank this year. It is wonderful to watch them get so excited. Every year a few students emerge as the "fish kids" - the ones who REALLY love to care for and watch the tank. Three times a year the students switch classroom jobs and the two "Aqua Tech" positions are always the most sought after jobs in the room.
We learned about the fish by researching about the species we received, watching them, and even when one died we whipped out a microscope to examine its scales and eyes up close. Might sound gross to some, but I am a science nerd, and the kids love stuff like that.
I hope the fish and shrimp adjust to their new home.
Again, thank you. Susan (aka Ms. Walker)

As always it was our pleasure to sponsor your classroom tank and we look forward to doing it again next year. You and the students do a great job in maintaining the tank throughout the school year. All the fish and shrimp were re-donated to a tank in the union office at the Chrysler plant in Windsor.
See you in September........
